Few things lift a home quite like a fresh bouquet, and in Bali a vase of blooms feels especially at home among the open windows, sea air, and warm light. That same tropical climate, though, asks a little more of your flowers than a cooler one would. Heat, humidity, and strong sun can shorten the life of even the loveliest arrangement if it is left to fend for itself. The good news is that keeping flowers fresh in Bali comes down to a handful of simple habits. Cut flowers are happiest somewhere cool, still, and shaded, which is the opposite of a sunny Bali afternoon. Warm air speeds up the rate at which blooms drink and lose moisture, humidity encourages bacteria to build in the water, and direct sun coaxes petals to open and fade more quickly. None of this means your flowers are doomed to a short life. It simply means a little daily attention goes a long way, and that the right blooms, chosen for the conditions, will always reward you. Start with a clean vase and fresh, cool water

The single most important thing you can do is give your flowers clean water in a clean vase. Wash the vase thoroughly with soap before you arrange, because even a faint residue from a previous bouquet carries bacteria that block the stems and shorten the display. Fill it with cool, fresh water, and if your flowers arrive with a sachet of flower food, dissolve it in fully. That little packet is not a gimmick. It feeds the blooms, keeps the water clear, and genuinely adds days to their life.

Trim the stems and refresh the water often

Before flowers go into the vase, trim two to three centimetres from each stem at a sharp angle using a clean knife or scissors. The angled cut gives a larger surface to drink through and stops stems sitting flat against the base. Strip away any leaves that would fall below the waterline, since submerged foliage rots quickly and clouds the water. In Bali’s warmth we suggest changing the water every day or two, giving the vase a quick rinse and re-trimming the stems a little each time. It takes a couple of minutes and makes a visible difference.

Keep flowers cool, shaded, and out of the breeze

Where you place your bouquet matters just as much as how you condition it. Choose a spot away from direct sun, and keep arrangements clear of the warm draught from open doors, ceiling fans, and air-conditioning units, all of which dry petals out. Steer clear of placing flowers near ripening fruit too, as the bowl of mangoes on the counter releases a natural gas that ages blooms faster. If you have the option, moving a precious arrangement somewhere cooler overnight will help it last noticeably longer.

Caring for tropical blooms in particular
