Tropical Flowers of Bali: A Florist's Guide to Island Blooms

Bali's tropical climate nurtures some of the most spectacular flowers in the world. From the sacred frangipani that graces every temple offering to the dramatic heliconia that towers in jungle gardens, the island's floral diversity is extraordinary. Here's our guide to Bali's most beautiful blooms and how we use them.

Frangipani (Jepun)

The quintessential Bali flower. Known locally as jepun, frangipani comes in creamy white, soft pink, and golden yellow varieties. You'll see them in temple offerings (canang sari), floating in villa pools, and tucked behind ears. In our arrangements, frangipani adds an unmistakably Balinese touch — we love using them in welcome arrangements for villas and hotels.

Orchids

Indonesia is home to over 5,000 orchid species, and Bali grows some of the most stunning. Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda orchids are available year-round and bring elegance to any arrangement. We use cascading orchids in bridal bouquets, statement orchid stems in corporate lobbies, and potted orchids as lasting gifts.

Heliconia and bird of paradise

For dramatic, architectural arrangements, nothing beats heliconia and bird of paradise. These striking tropical flowers bring bold colour and sculptural form. We use them in hotel lobby installations, event centrepieces, and contemporary arrangements where you want a "wow" factor. They're also incredibly long-lasting — often staying fresh for two weeks or more.

Tuberose (Sedap Malam)

Prized for its intoxicating fragrance, tuberose — known as sedap malam ("fragrant night") in Indonesian — is one of Bali's most special flowers. The scent intensifies in the evening, making it perfect for dinner party centrepieces and wedding reception arrangements. We source the freshest tuberose from local Bali growers.

Lotus

Sacred in Balinese Hindu culture, the lotus symbolises purity, beauty, and spiritual awakening. Pink and white lotus grow abundantly in Bali's water temples and rice paddies. While they're more challenging to use in traditional bouquets due to their aquatic nature, we incorporate lotus in floating arrangements, ceremonial installations, and spa and wellness settings.
