Anthurium Flowers in Bali: The Tropical Statement Bloom
Few flowers feel as gloriously at home in Bali as the anthurium. With its glossy, heart-shaped bloom and sculptural silhouette, it looks as though it were made for the tropics — and in a sense it was. At Maison Bloom we adore the anthurium for its confidence and its sheer staying power in our island climate, and it has become a favourite for villas, hotels and anyone who wants an arrangement with a little more architecture. This guide explains what makes the anthurium so special, how to style it, and how to have one delivered anywhere across Bali.
What is an anthurium?
The anthurium is a tropical plant native to the rainforests of Central and South America, though it now flourishes across South-East Asia and grows beautifully here in Bali. The part everyone recognises as the “flower” is actually a waxy, heart-shaped modified leaf called a spathe, from which a slender upright spike known as the spadix rises. That lacquered, almost patent-leather finish is entirely natural, and it is what gives the anthurium its unmistakable, sculptural look. They come in rich reds, corals, blush pinks, pure whites and even deep burgundy and green.
Why anthuriums love Bali’s climate
This is where the anthurium truly earns its place in a Bali florist’s studio. Because it is a genuine tropical bloom, it thrives in the very warmth and humidity that shortens the life of more delicate imported flowers. A cut anthurium can hold its shape and shine for two to three weeks — sometimes longer — making it one of the most rewarding flowers you can buy on the island. For anyone furnishing a villa or planning an event in the heat, that longevity is a real gift. You can read more about which blooms cope best here in our guide to tropical flowers in Bali.
Styling with anthuriums
Anthuriums are wonderfully versatile. A few stems in a tall glass vase make a strikingly modern statement with almost no arranging required, while a fuller design pairs them with monstera leaves, palm and orchids for a lush, resort-style look. Their strong lines also make them a favourite for contemporary villa and hotel flowers, where a single dramatic arrangement can hold a whole reception space. For a softer effect, we love blending blush anthuriums with roses and trailing greenery — the contrast of matte petals against that glossy spathe is quietly luxurious.
The meaning of the anthurium
With its heart shape, the anthurium has long been associated with hospitality, abundance and open-hearted affection. In the language of flowers it speaks of welcome and warmth, which makes it a thoughtful choice for a housewarming, a new business or a gesture of thanks. A red anthurium carries a note of romance, while white and green varieties feel serene and architectural — ideal when you want something elegant rather than overtly sentimental. Whatever the shade, it is a bloom that says you have chosen with care.
