Galungan & Kuningan Flowers in Bali: Blooms for the Island’s Holiest Days

Twice within the space of ten days, Bali transforms. Tall, curving penjor line every lane, temples fill with colour, and families gather to honour their ancestors. Galungan and Kuningan are among the most beautiful and meaningful days in the Balinese calendar — a celebration of the victory of good over evil and a homecoming for the spirits of those who came before. What are Galungan & Kuningan?

Galungan marks the day the ancestral spirits return to visit their family homes, while Kuningan, ten days later, is when they are lovingly sent back to the heavens. Falling on the 210-day Pawukon calendar, the festival celebrates dharma’s triumph over adharma — good over evil. Homes are cleansed, offerings are prepared with great care, and the whole island takes on a gentle, reverent glow. Flowers sit at the very heart of it all, carrying prayers, colour and gratitude in every petal.

The flowers of the season

Balinese offerings favour blooms rich in symbolism and colour. Bright marigold and yellow chrysanthemum stand for prosperity and the golden light of Kuningan, deep red hibiscus and roses for courage and devotion, and fragrant white jasmine and frangipani for purity and the divine. Each colour points to a direction and a deity, so a well-made offering is a small work of sacred art. Penjor & the art of offerings

No sight captures Galungan quite like the penjor — the graceful bamboo pole that arches over the entrance to every home, dressed in young coconut leaf, fruit, grain and flowers as a thanksgiving for the earth’s abundance. Alongside it sit the daily canang sari, the small woven trays of petals offered with a whispered prayer. Flowers for guests & hosts

For those living in Bali or visiting during the festival, sending flowers to Balinese friends, colleagues or staff is a warm and respectful gesture. A generous arrangement in golds, reds and whites echoes the spirit of the season without stepping into sacred ritual, which is best left to the family. Ordering thoughtfully during the festival

Demand for flowers rises sharply in the days before Galungan and Kuningan, so we always encourage ordering a little ahead. Bouquets and seasonal arrangements begin at IDR 450,000 and rise to around IDR 1,500,000 for a lavish design, each one handcrafted in our air-conditioned Canggu studio.
