What is a protea?

Native to South Africa and named after Proteus, the Greek god who could change his shape, the protea is a flower of extraordinary variety. The best known is the magnificent king protea, whose great crown of pointed bracts can measure the width of a dinner plate, but the family also includes the softer pink ice protea, the feathery pincushion protea and slender leucadendrons. Their firm, waxy petals and bold silhouettes give arrangements an instant sense of occasion, and because each bloom is so distinctive, even a single stem can carry a whole design.

Grown in Bali’s highlands

While proteas travel well, some of the loveliest stems we use are grown right here in Indonesia. The cool, elevated slopes around Bedugul and the highlands of Java offer the crisp climate proteas love, which means we can often source them locally rather than flying them halfway around the world. Styling with protea

A protea rewards a confident hand. Because a single king protea is so commanding, we often build a bouquet around just one or two, surrounding them with softer roses, orchids and tropical foliage so the protea remains the star. Massed pincushion proteas, on the other hand, bring warmth and playfulness to a design.
