Sometimes overlooked in favour of showier blooms, the chrysanthemum — or krisan, as it is known here — is one of the hardest-working flowers in any Bali florist’s studio: generous, long-lasting and grown in abundance in the island’s own cool highlands. What is a chrysanthemum?

The chrysanthemum belongs to one of the largest flowering families in the world, with hundreds of cultivated varieties ranging from tight, button-like pompons to the great shaggy spider chrysanthemums beloved of florists. They arrive in almost every colour imaginable — buttery yellows, blush pinks, deep bronzes, pure whites and rich burgundies that sit beautifully within our house palette. Their densely packed petals give arrangements a wonderful sense of fullness, and a single stem can carry several blooms, making them as good value as they are beautiful.

Grown in Bali’s cool highlands

One of the reasons we love working with chrysanthemums is that so many of them are grown right here on the island. The cool, misty highlands around Bedugul and the slopes of the central mountains offer the perfect climate for krisan farms, which supply florists across Bali with fresh, locally cut stems all year round. Styling with chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums are endlessly adaptable. Massed on their own in a single colour they make a modern, sculptural statement, while a mix of tones and textures gives a softer, garden-gathered feel. We love pairing them with roses and eucalyptus for a classic hand-tied bouquet, or with orchids and tropical foliage for something more distinctly Balinese. Their sturdiness and long vase life also make them a favourite for villa and hotel flowers, where arrangements need to look their best for days at a time in warm rooms.

The meaning of the chrysanthemum

Few flowers carry as much cultural weight as the chrysanthemum. Across much of Asia it symbolises long life, joy and good fortune, which is why it appears so often at celebrations and new beginnings. In some traditions white chrysanthemums are reserved for remembrance and sympathy, so they are a thoughtful, respectful choice for those moments too. That versatility of meaning — from heartfelt congratulations to gentle condolence — is part of what makes the chrysanthemum such a useful flower to know and to give.
