Torch Ginger Flowers in Bali: The Island’s Boldest Sculptural Bloom
Few flowers announce themselves quite like torch ginger. Rising on a tall, elegant stem and opening into a waxy crimson cone of layered petals, it is one of the most dramatic tropical blooms grown anywhere in Southeast Asia — and it feels entirely at home in Bali. Known locally as bunga kecombrang, and sometimes called the porcelain rose or ginger flower, it is a favourite at our Canggu studio for arrangements that need presence, structure and a real sense of place. Here is everything worth knowing about this striking flower, and how we love to use it.
What torch ginger actually is
Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) is a member of the ginger family and grows as a tall clumping plant across Bali’s warm, humid lowlands. The part we prize is the flower head: a firm, sculptural bloom in vivid pink to deep red, its glossy bracts arranged in a spiral that looks almost too perfect to be natural. In Indonesian kitchens the young buds are prized as a fragrant cooking ingredient, but as a cut flower the mature head is unmatched for architectural drama. It brings the same bold, unmistakably tropical energy as our other statement blooms — explore more of them in our guide to tropical flowers in Bali.
Why it thrives in Bali
Torch ginger loves exactly the conditions Bali offers in abundance: heat, humidity and rich volcanic soil. Because it grows locally rather than travelling from a cold-storage farm overseas, the stems we work with are fresh, sturdy and beautifully coloured. That local sourcing is part of why we love it — it keeps our footprint lighter and supports island growers, an approach we write about more in our piece on sustainable floristry in Bali. A flower this at ease in the climate also holds up remarkably well once cut, which matters enormously in our tropical heat.
How we style it
A single torch ginger stem can carry an entire arrangement. We often build around one or two heads as a focal point, pairing them with heliconia, monstera leaves, palm and other lush foliage for a confident, gallery-worthy look. Their strong vertical line makes them ideal for tall vases, reception pedestals and grand entrance displays where you want height and impact. For something more restrained, a lone stem in a simple ceramic vessel is quietly spectacular. Torch ginger sits especially well in the kind of bold, contemporary styling that photographs beautifully — see our thoughts on the most Instagram-worthy arrangements in Bali.
Torch ginger for weddings and events
For couples who want their Bali wedding to feel rooted in the tropics rather than transplanted from Europe, torch ginger is a gift. It brings colour and structure to ceremony arches, aisle markers and large-scale installations, and it reads as luxurious without ever feeling fussy. It also stands up to open-air heat far better than delicate imported blooms, making it a practical as well as beautiful choice for beachfront and garden celebrations. We use it often in bespoke event work — you can see how we approach the bigger picture in our guide to wedding flowers in Bali.
Keeping torch ginger fresh
One of torch ginger’s great virtues is longevity. The waxy bracts are naturally hardy, and a well-kept stem can last a week or more — often outlasting softer flowers in the same arrangement. Keep the vase topped up with clean water, trim the stem end every few days and keep the display out of direct sun and away from fans or air-conditioning draughts. Those simple habits go a long way in our climate, and we share more of them in our guide to keeping flowers fresh in Bali.
